The History of Eastside Community COGIC

Eastside Community Church came into existence through God’s inspiration to two men:  Elder Van Covington and Elder Rodney McDowell.  In December 1999, Elder Covington started a home-based Bible study where Sandra Lee, Epifanio Valenzuela, and Lillian Vasquez rededicated their lives to Christ.  Shortly thereafter, these two men, with the support of their spouses, Sis. Frances Covington and Missionary Lamanaca McDowell began Sunday morning services in the Hilton East Hotel.

The Lord led Elder McDowell to inquire about our Kolb Road site. With multi-colored chairs for pews, 10 members, and a vision, the Lord blessed us to begin services there on March 4, 2000.  The following Sunday, Chris Lee rededicated his life to Christ, and the Lee family supported the ministry.

By this time,  Minister Steve Newton and family had joined the group.  Minister Richard & Evangelist Pamela Brooks and Mother Joann Mayo added their support.  Mother Valenzuela and Rosemary were received as honorary members.  Some of our brothers and sisters in Christ have come to lend their prayers and exhortations. The church continues to grow, the Word is being sown, the sick are being healed, prophecies are being fulfilled, and services are being rendered to the community.

Eastside Community Church of God in Christ’s mission is to be a light on the east side of Tucson that shines for all nations, kindreds, tribes, and tongues.  We’re standing on God’s promises.  For we know he is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.  Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
